Every April, the real estate industry commemorates the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1969, a landmark bill signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on April 11, 1968.

The act promised to make discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion and national origin. In 1988, the Fair Housing Act was amended to include sex, disability and familial status. The National Association of REALTORS® Code of Ethics sets a standard of conduct for real estate professionals that goes beyond the federal statue in promoting inclusivity and fair housing practices.

The NAR Code of Ethics requires REALTORS® to provide equal professional services to all clients and customers regardless of their race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation or gender identity. Moreover, the NAR Code of Ethics emphasizes the obligation of real estate professionals to treat all parties fairly and equal opportunity in housing. By adhering to the NAR Code of Ethics, real estate agents demonstrate their commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct, thereby contributing to the promotion of fair housing and the elimination of discriminatory practices in the industry.

As REALTORS®, you understand the vital role we play in building communities. Fair housing serves as the bedrock of our foundation, ensuring that everyone has access to safe and equitable housing opportunities. As we commemorate the Fair Housing Act, it’s imperative that we advocate for accountability, culture change, and comprehensive training within our industry. By prioritizing these principals, we not only elevate our businesses but also advance homeownership and expand opportunities for all. Join us this year as we join forces with our allied partners to promote fairness, equality and inclusivity in housing. Together, we can make a meaningful difference and create a lasting positive change in our communities.
